After an Autozone misdiagnosis of regulator and a redirect from another VW shop our good fortune lead us to Meyers shortly before closing time the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
Jose came out to the parking lot while obviously busy and while still on the phone started checking the car. He diagnosed our problem as alternator. Then he disappeared for 15minutes and came back to inform us that there were no alternators available in Vegas or in the US for overnight. He had however arranged for a local rebuilder to do ours in the morning. He called a hotel for us and handed the phone to us to make our reservation.
While we were unloading the van the latch on the sliding door broke and we could no longer open it. Jose said "No problem, we have a bunch of those." We added it to the work order and he drove us to our hotel. The next evening (just before closing time on the day before Thanksgiving) he came and picked us up in our van. Alternator and door handle in perfect working order. He had also noted it was running rich and had adjusted that and fixed a bunch of dirty connections as well.

The starter contact in the ignition switch had gone marginal and it took from 1 to 15 tries on the switch before it would activate the starter solenoid. We were at home in Mammoth Lakes, CA, wishing to go to Reno so I called J’s VWVans after finding them on the internet. They took an appointment to replace the ignition switch.
The starter got worse so I spliced a wire onto the cigarette lighter feed, ran it through a new push-button switch on the dashboard and down to the starter solenoid, and thus had a reliable way to start the car. I cancelled my appointment but made a point to visit them when in Reno. They were graciously helpful in providing needed information regarding complications associated with replacing the ignition switch cluster down on the steering column, and provided me with names of firms who specialized in parts for older VW’s including vans.
These people are great. Martin wanted to make it clear that they want to stand by their service and he offered me credit for my previous timing belt replacement. We talked about the importance of good communication between the shop and active van enthusiasts such as myself. However, once we got up into the mountain passes on the I5, we'd started experiencing the dreaded "intermittent Vanagon Syndrome" (which we'd known nothing about until a bunch of internet searches, calls to the van's owner and a stop at a VW shop in northern CA). With the van erratically behaving like a bucking bronco (at first), then winding its way down to a stuttering snail's pace, we pulled into Sparks to see Martin.
By this point it was a bit of a dire emergency as we had no faith that we'd ever be able to cover the last 1000+ miles home, especially if we had to go up and over any more big hills. Martin knew exactly what the problem was as soon as we described it over the phone. We got to the shop, he took it for a test drive, checked the condition of the air flow meter (clean as a whistle) and installed a "pig tail" to improve the grounding and electrical signals from the electrical harness to the AFM.
Voila - problem solved. After one more aggressive test drive to confirm the repair (seemed OK), we happily settled up and headed on our way north. The van drives like a dream now and got us all the way home with no more problems. (Hopefully the owner will approve!) That Martin really knows his stuff - highly recommended! And while you're waiting, the folks hanging out in the shop are really nice and interesting.

This has been a problem for me and the previous owner for quite some time. I have been to 3 garages that specialize in VW before I, by sheer luck, happened onto J's VW Vans. The problem seemed to be in the air supply to the fuel injection.
In Portland, OR the engine stalled and would not start after loosing power intermittently for a while. I had a tune up and the Mass Air Flow Meter replaced at a garage there which did not resolve the periodic stalling. The After Market Meter was removed, the old meter reinstalled and there was no difference in the performance other than the tune-up. In Midvale, UT the problem was getting to the point that I did not want to risk continuing on my road trip without some VW mechanical advice and help.
While in Midvale there was a harness ordered to help with the problem. After the installation of the "adapter" the problem seemed to go away for about another 800 miles. They are the closest VW dealer and when I called, prior to traveling the 250 miles to get to their shop, to ask if they could fix the AC on my Rialta, they responded in the affirmative.
My husband had just recently passed away from cancer and I bought the Rialta to travel with my two cattle dogs, so AC is really important. No cold air was coming out of the dash vents nor the overhead vents into the cabin. The service rep was friendly but made no mention of a diagnosis fee. After the tech inspected it, the service rep told me that the good news was, it only needed a $25 part, but the bad news was, it would take a day to get the part.
He then told me if I took my car they would charge a $125 diagnosis fee. I was traveling with two dogs, ended up leaving the Rialta, renting a car, got a motel room and went back the next day. I waited for 8 hours while a mechanic squirt stuff on the engine, then told me he couldn't fix it like it needed, but that the air worked if the engine reached a speed of 55-65 mph. The bill: $807.31 not including the rental car and motel stay.
I spoke to the service manager who told me I would have to leave it with them for several weeks so they could fiddle around with it to get it working, in between other jobs. That would be the most economical solution. For all I know, I would have ended up paying several thousand dollars more to Lithia. I also had a motorcycle in service in Sparks and was towing a trailer. I paid the bill, picked up the bike and drove back to Bishop, over five Sierra passes, arriving home about 2am.
The AC did not work. My option was to drive back to Reno, over the five mountain passes, drop the car off again and let them work on it endlessly or take them to small claims court. They knew I was from out of town and that it would cost more money to come back and fight them.Shop Rating: AvoidNot RecommendedReport Date: 05.20.2016 Write a Review for this shop German Wagen Werks545 Depaoli St.Reno, Nevada 89512Phone: Ofc: 775-501-5512Cell: [email protected]
